Beloved friend: senseless death

Hello Everybody,
My friend, Ed, was mowed down by a driver who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol on Thursday morning at 8.30. I live not too far from the scene of the crime and I have not been able to walk that street as of yet. Ed was getting materials for a Bereavement class he was to teach for the local Hospice when he was crushed against his car and then dragged until he lay in the middle of the road. The driver fled leaving Ed either dead or dying in the street. An attorney whose office was close by picked him up and laid him in the backseat of his car so people wouldn't gawk at him. He was declared dead at the scene. Ed was a Buddhist, he translated for the local Tibetan monks, he loved singing old Morris Dancer songs, he lived his life in service of other people and didn't drink at all. I have been asking myself: how can I be more like Ed? What would he want me to take away from this? He wouldn't have wanted anger. He would have wanted me to see that he gave his life so this 63-year-old woman would maybe have a chance at bettering her life even if it is in prison. I just wanted to share this. I am very sad but I also know that I have to look at this from a different perspective. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, PLEASE! Love to everyone. Posted on 10/11/08, 09:10 am |

I'm sorry Anne- I really am.
I often drive to Louisville on I-71, and pass a roadsign in memory of the biggest drunk driving accident ever. A drunk went the wrong way down the interstate and took out a bus full of teenagers returning from an amusement park. I never had a DUI or accident, but I've driven under the influence too many time to count. I hope and pray I'll never do that again. Celebrate the good things he did in his life, and continue to make sure that people understand the senslessness of his death. God Bless! P.S.- A sign marking the spot isn't a bad idea. It's a reminder that a good man died by the hand of a drunk driver at that location. This type of thing always makes me stop and think.

I am so sorry for your loss of a good friend and a good man. I'm glad you're trying to view this in a way that Ed would want you to, but it's OK to be sad about it.
Thank you for posting this; like Jacker I never got a DWI but I drove under the influence daily for awhile before I sobered up. That is actually something I focused on when I came in, I knew if I went back out my "luck" was up and I'd certainly either do something bad and/or get A DWI. Who knows, maybe somebody contemplating a drink today will read this and not drink today.....you never know.

Anne,
I'm so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful man. I can see that he touched you and so many lives with his love and service. Like you, I'll be asking myself the same question. "How can I be more like Ed?" Alcohol hurts everyone on so many levels. I have been behind the wheel after drinking. I received my first DUI a month ago. Thank God no one was hurt. It makes me sick to think about how stupid I was. I love Jacker's idea about putting some type of memorial for your friend. To remember him and remind the idiots who drink and drive. You know I love you girl.

Your story gave me goosebumps, and it also reminds me how much worse my drunk driving accident could have been. Ive been sober since July '06 and I still need these reminders to keep me on my toes. Im so sorry about your friend. He sounds like an incredible person and I hope his life can stop atleast one drunk from getting behind the wheel.
Blessed Be, Jen

This is a little about Ed and his contribution to many people, he was remarkable. Look at that smile, it says everything. I too had driven under the influence when I was drinking. I can only say that I will NEVER do it again, any of it. Enjoy, it is a very short read and the heartfelt messages are just beautiful. I did write one but for my own privacy I won't reveal who I am. If you know my first name, you'll know which one is mine. Peace to everybody. About Ed:)

Oh, I am SO sorry for your loss!
We have had more hit and run's this year than I can ever remember. A 21 year old that already had 3 DUI's, left a Casino, hit someone and fled the scene. When she was caught, she denied it all BUT, the purse of the victim was hanging from the front of her car. WHEN will people LEARN? Not until they quit drinking when they can't handle it cause we ALL know, (those of us that have been there) that we can drive no matter how much we drank. I thank God the 1000 times I drove drunk, I didn't kill anyone. And lastly, you HAVE to keep the HATE from eating you up. "They" all say that, How you do it is a question I have NO answer for. It will ONLY hurt you as the person that killed your friend, cares NOTHING about how it effects you or anyone else but themselves. On Oprah the other day, a man's wife and son were murdered and he vowed to forgive the person who did it and let go of his anger before he was released from the hospital as he was also shot. I don't know HOW he did that, especially because it was his 2nd son who did the crime. (?) But it brought him peace (AND a book deal :) so maybe THAT helped. You're in my thoughts!!!!!!!!
