What are you most grateful for in sobriety?
Today, I'm grateful I have an AA meeting to go to, and fortunately more than one to choose from if I want! I'm …

Can one make a decision to just not drink today...That is not to say that there isn't more work to do, cuz there is. As long as one doesn't drink today, there is hope of a brighter tommorrow.
No matter how one stays sober...can we just agree that no matter what, just don't drink today... Posted on 09/07/08, 10:09 pm |

Yes, but keep in mind it's 10:30pm here. That'll be an easy promise to keep.
But I made the decision not to drink this morning - Have a good day!

YES MAAM, MOUNTAIN GIRL. HITTING IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD. NOW, IF I CAN ONLY TRY, NOT TO THINK ABOUT IT! WONDER IF MY THINKING IS BLINKING.

Hope for a brighter tomorrow never put a dent in my drinking, and it still scares me to pump myself up that sort of thinking. I say that because then I'm only setting myself up to be disillusioned and disappointed when the shit hits the fan in my life, which it has many times in sobriety.
There's a saying I heard in Al Anon, which is that expectations are premeditated resentments. So I try to keep my expectations as low as possible.

Ok, Nemo...if I do not drink today:
1) chances are good that I won't come to with a hangover 2) I can almost bet that I will not be driving drunk 3) I more than likely will not come to in the drunk tank There are three things that will make for a brighter tommorrow if I do not drink today!

Angel,
And I've not had to drink on days when: 1. A doc told me I had two years to live. 2. I watched my sobriety dream house burn to the ground. 3. The love of my life lost her bladder to cancer. Those were, I assure you, NOT bright days, but I still didn't drink. What can threaten my sobriety at this stage of the game is complacency. It's been a long time since I've had the hangovers and the DUI. These are distant memories that I can recall only in vague outline. What keeps me going now is joy in sobriety that's always there, no matter what happens or doesn't happen.

Nemo...everyone needs to start somewhere. When I first got sober, all I could do was just not drink today. I did not drink that day.
I get what you are saying really...my life had to change...I had to do stuff differently. I had answers to find and habits to break. I had amends to make and actions galore to follow through with. But none of this could or would have a chance if a had even one drink. Yes Nemo...we all had to start somewhere, even you.
