I slipped last night after 4 days of sobriety. I'm so pissed. It was going so well and I really thought I had a handle on the whole thing. last night it just got so hard and I told myself I could have 1 glass of wine.... to take the edge off and then stop. 1 turned into another and another and another. At that point it was "why stop now?" I feel so ashamed and don't know how I am going to start all over again. Things are better with my husband and being Friday I don't know how I am going to face this from step one.
Why is this so hard? I would appreciate any advise.. Thanks in advance
Meadow

" i agree with ashely... please don't negate the progress based on one day.

don't take away accomplishments this is a process toward what you want to do. if you beat yourself up, you won't remember that you deserve to achieve what you want.

you aren't at "step one" as you say... you are down the path way more than that!!! so glad to hear things are better with your hub... "

" Maybe you need to look at the fact that the way you are currently trying to stay sober is not working. I see on your profile that willpower is not working. Maybe you need to look for another solution that will work for you.

I tried for years to stop drinking and could never get together any significant length of sobriety however hard I tried. One day I realised, after another failure, that i had been trying the same way every time and it had never worked before so why did I expect it to work this time. I realised I would never be able to stay sober on my own willpower, it just wasnt possible.

I then became willing to listen to some people who had done what I could never do - stay sober. I realised that if I did what they had done it might work for me too.

What the people I met had done was work the 12 step program in AA. So i did that. After approx 17 years of drinking pretty much everyday and not being able to stop I have now been sober for a few years and my life is dramatically better in many ways.

I had tried every way i could think of to stop drinking on my own and it didnt work. The 12 steps did work where everything else had failed. "

" Thank you so much for all the posititve feedback. I am not willing to give up, I think I am going to just get rid of all the alcohol in the house so it's not even an option. I put it out of sight but I guess thats not good enough, until it is out of mind. Again I appreciate the encouragement, it makes it a lot easier to try again.

" I'm curious, if you are trying to quit drinking, why are you keeping it in the house? That just sounds like you are setting yourself up. "

" I agree with SpongeB, indoor plumbing is great. Just dump all that stuff right down the sewer and it will at least eliminate that temptation. Just remember, nobody's perfect especially those of us with alcohol problems. It isn't a contest to see who can be sober the longest, it is to be sober 1 day at a time. Just start another day. God Bless "

" Will removing alcohol from the house really stop you drinking?

It never did for me, I would just go out and get more. "
