An old-timer with 23 years abstinence today in AA

Must have some issues he hasn't dealt with.
He was chairing the meeting that was suppose to going until 1:00 and at about 12:59 he interrupted the person that was talking rudely and stood up and said it was time to close the meeting. People slowly got up (I didn't want to-I thought we should let the talker finish) and we closed the meeting. This old-timer is a friend of mine and have known for almost 4 years now and he does NOT care what other people think of him to a fault. Everyone was shocked at this and I was angry at his rudeness and how it must have looked to the new people. It just goes to show how cocky some old-timers can get with their belief in their quality of sobriety and their "I don't give a shit what other people think of me" attitude. He owes an apology to this man that was speaking but knowing him as I do, I doubt he will apologize. Just goes to show that how many meetings a person has gone to and how many years of abstinence does not necessarily make a person have healthy sobriety. Posted on 07/24/08, 06:07 pm |

The down side of being around the rooms for a number of years is watching the turnover. Sometimes the whole scene reminds me of M*A*S*H, where the doctors and nurses had to grow thick hides and develop a sense of macabre humor to protect their own sanity from the horror of the reality they dealt with every day.
Before y'all newbies judge us oldfarts too harshly, try if you can to put it all in the context of all the number funerals we've attended and obituaries we've read before you arrived at your first meeting. Try to remember what Hawkeye and Company were like whenever they heard the medivac choppers, and that'll give you a rough idea of where we're coming from.

That makes sense Nemo, a person has been in AA so long he turns into a cold-hearted ass.
I know old Dewey, and he's a good guy, just a crankyoldman is all.

One thing I believe that ( some ) of the old timers forget is where they came from when they started there journey. The average sobriety time of the friends I have is about 15 years and one of my best friends will have 32 this year and the reason I hang with them they never forgot where they came from. Don't judge the newcomer even if they go back out into the madness, because they all know there just one drink away from a drunk
If someone is protecting their own sanity from the horror of reality , there being self centered and never understood the term, living on life's terms and acceptance.

Nope, Dewey didn't forget where he came from, he never even knew where he was back then.

Dan,
Call me cold-hearted ass if you must, but unless we could maintain some sort of bemused detachment from the passing parade of soap opera tragedies that go through the revolving door every day, we'd be a lot more cynical than we are.

gjm,
I have been hanging with Dewey because he gives back massages during the meetings. I usually sit next to him unless he's chairing. Then I can't get my daily massage unless I sit on his lap whilst he chairs. I like talking to old people (WHOOPS! Did I say that?) I meant old-timers because sometimes they're interesting. I find Nemorino and his life fascinating. Seriously.

Diane, I'm not talking about Dewey here. Hell sounds like the guy had a bad today.
I chair a Tuesday morning meeting this month and someone said something and I reacted badly and it doesn't matter what it was about but I promptly did a 10 step--well almost promptly.

Oh well, glad you did. Dewey won't be able to, even if he wants to because the guy was working here temporarily and today was his last day here.
He was saying his good byes and thank yous when he was interrupted.
