Ive had an alcohol problem now for over a year, i drink every night, cant go without, drink to extremes, and sometimes find myself having a drink on a morning,,just to calm me down. I recently went to see my phyciatrist and asked for help with this. He has gave me a weeks course of valium???? I have to take 4 on the first 2 days, 3 on the next 2 days, 2 on the next 2 days and then 1 on the last day. How on earth can this help me give up the booze??? Maybe yes in that week i take them,, as i know what valium does to me,,but what about the next week? I know for a fact i will be back to drinking again,,a year long addiction does not go away in one week. Has anyone got any ideas on this please,,as this has confused me very much!!!

Sounds like the doc it not educated in the disease of alcoholism.
but then again most are not from my exp. and don't have a clue. I do want to say only you can decide it your alcoholic or not but from your post it sounds like its a good possibility. I do not push AA on anyone but I would suggest going online and read the Dr. opinion in the big book, that might clear it up for ya. This pills your taking is just like a band aid on a very deep cut. I wish you well.

What he prescribed is the method called ambulatory detox. Something I don't agree with but is becoming common. It is a taper to ease the discomfort of detox and withdrawal and if taken as prescibed will get you through the heeby jeebies. That is the easy part. During this period you should look for support from people who understand what your going through. I have NO problem suggesting AA as it is easiest to find if nothing else. You CAN NOT do this alone. Ask yourself this What have you got to lose other than an hour and travel time. What have you got to gain. At minimum you will know you are not alone.

Hi, I'm sorry you are scared & having such a rough time. My pdoc wouldn't consider for one moment giving me any type of benzo valium, xanax, etc.) as they are highly addictive. I was in the same boat as you. I had to go to rehab to detox and become educated about my destructiveness/illness.
I am by no means suggesting you will become addicted to valium in one week. I'm only bringing this up in case your pdoc provides more in hopes of a solution to your problem. Valium will not make you stop drinking if that's really what you want. Surround yourself with support. Keep reaching out. We are here and care about you. {{{{hugging Chameleon77}}}}}

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for a long-term rehab program. Something in the 3 to 12 months range.
Have you asked your doctor or anyone about something like this?
