Cold Turkey???

Some people can choose not to drink – just like that “Cold Turkey” as they say. (Bill Wilson called them the “certain type of hard drinker” in the AA Big Book page 20).
Still others have mysteriously lost the power to choose not to drink. No amount of diligence, tenacity, knowledge or will-power seems to work for them in the long run. It is as if they are beyond all human aid (including psychological tricks and tips). Which type are you and what does/does not work for you? Posted on 06/06/08, 08:06 pm |

i guess you could say i'm trying to do it cold turkey. i just chose not to. i guess it wasn't too hard for me b/c i caught it before it got worse. i also have love from my boyfriend, his parents and my family. basically i took my control back before it was too late.

I'm the "mysteriously lost the power" type. When I first started to 'run into trouble' I told myself if it gets any worse I’d be able to slow down. Stop wasn't in the vocabulary back then.
For me it ran along the saying "The chains of habit are to weak to be felt, until they are to strong to be broken". The only thing that works for me when I relapse (I don't just lapse) is detox. Things have to become pretty dire, even to do that I must catch the ‘drinking me’ off guard. I'm starting to believe it is beyond human aid in my case. As sceptical as I've been and as strong I am, it doesn't work my way.

My question exactly...
Bran, are you saying you tried to quit on your own but couldn't? Or, went to AA and did? Or neither? Or both? :)

Who cares?
Have you forgotten that everyone is exactly where they should be? No one is better than. No one is lesser than. No one member is greater than another. We all have a role to play. We are all here to help one another. I may have a greater knowledge of the Big Book than someone else, but that is because I have studied it. Anyone who does what I did can have the same knowledge. Now, how about you? Are you "A" member of AA...or are you AA? Guru

I just read WHICH TYPE ARE YOU AND WHAT DOES/DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU.
I didn't read anywhere where anyone said they were better (or less than) the other. Maybe I missed something.(?)

I did 'cold turkey' but I am also a regular yoga practitioner as well as a Buddhist. I have to remain in my sobriety in order to practice what I espouse. I don't know if these are psychological tips or tricks but they work for me. Blessings and peace to you

I needed treatment to get stopped.
I needed AA to stay stopped. I need the 12 steps to continue to have the obsession to drink lifted.
