I really like the flavored sparkling water. Examples are LaCroix and Canada Dry Brands. They're fizzy, there is some flavor, but no sugar or caffine. There really isn't anything in them but carbonated water and natural flavoring AND they offer a lot of flavors. (again, no sugar and no artificial sweetener).
Not every sumpermarket will carry them, but most will. I used to drink beer- this has been a good subsitute because I'm used to the carbonation. Ooops - I see you're in the U.K. The brands might be different, but I know there are many other brands in Europe.

Well I am in England and I drink lots of good strong hot tea but I don't have that with my meal.
I like something that will not interfere with the taste of the food so I enjoy chilled soda water or sparkling water with a slice of fresh lemon, orange or lime. Quite often I enjoy the above with a good dash of Roses lime cordial. Pure blackcurrant juice is lovely too but I don't like grape juice - far too sweet and "pseudo wine" for me. Whatever you have, put it in a tall glass, not a wine glass or you might feel really short-changed if you are craving! Bitter lemon or tonic water with a twist is nice too Of course there is always the Scottish favourite which came out from under the table at a Blackpool AA convention dinner dance - Irn Bru made by Girders of Scotland!

If I want just a little more ombiance during a nice dinner I take a wine glass and use Welches sparkling red or white grape juice. It is delicious.
