avoiding withdrawal ?

Question for those of you who've been at this longer than I have. I'm quitting drinking but am wondering if I should "step down" so as to avoid withdrawal. I'm not sure if this is necessary for me b/c I'm not a super heavy drinker, plus, last month while traveling I went a span of two weeks with only two glasses of wine one even and didn't have any withdrawal--so maybe I'm expecting something that won't come to pass. I normally drink between one and two bottles of wine a night, when I do drink, and have kept this up the last four nights. Should I "step down" by just having one glass for the next two nights so as to make it easier on my body, or am I fine just stopping on a dime, as it were? Thanks, Chris

" It doesn't sound to me as if you really need to phase out the drink.

Either way you will experience physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms and the trick will be in not letting them lead you back to drinking. "

" Hi limo..I too was 1 - 2 bottles of wine a night for 20 plus years, I did not experience withdrawals..the only problems I faced were / are sleepless nights and headaches in the morning but they only last a matter of minutes...

Best wishes on your journey..Les "

" Trying to step down or wean yourself off is nothing more than torture for an alcoholic. It'll only set off the craving for more.Once you take the first one...... "

" For me it was "all" or "nothing". I had to quit cold turkey because I couldn't control myself after one. Whether you wean yourself off or quit all together, there will still be triggers. You will have to figure out for yourself what will work best for you. I wish you luck either way. "

" Same category as you limo. But more like 2, rather than 1-2 (I mean if you open a bottle you finish it right?!)

Which is my problem. The only time I managed to 'manage' my drinking was in pregnancy when I would buy just one mini bottle of wine (1/4 of a bottle).

But hey, why don't you try it? I don't know what counts as a super heavy drinker but my body cannot cope with 2 bottles of wine these days without having to sleep loads into the next day and feeling really low (I'm 38). "

" don't see any problem at all. if you were going to have withdrawal problems you would have felt some during your periods of relative abstinence. i was a 24/7 dt type drinker. believe me you would know already....d. "

" hi chris, I would say that you have more control then 99.999999% of most alkis if you can wean yourself off the booze-I think it is risky-sounds like it may work better for you to just give it up all together. Be sure to drink lots of water and if you like green tea-best of luck to you. "
