i need some advice on my drinking habits and since there is nobody to talk to wher i am i thought the internet would be a better solution. i find myself drinking about 4 pints at home each night 7 days a week. the reasoning for this is because i have mild insomnia and my medication is not strong enough. the doctors wont prescribe higher dosage due to the mildness of my case however i have the WORST nights resulting in days upon days of not sleeping followed by the maximum of 4 hours in a 72 hour period. what should i do?
thanks for taking the time to read my post.

" Hi - not too sure how old you are - I'm guessing not so old?

My name is Les - I started self medicating with alcohol to sleep when I was 22 - and that was a long time ago. After 25 years I finally admitted it was perhaps not the best decision in my life - DOH!
I stopped drinking thsi year and have not had more than 3 hours sleep a night. Strangley I wake up more refreshed than I have in the last two decades

Take care - learn form this fool - not the way to go..

PS - try Sominex, but check your meds. Not to be taken with MAOI's "

" You should NOT be drinking with sleep medications. One time you might not wake up. PLEASE tell your doctor that your drinking has increased and that your medication isn't working. You don't want to end up an alcoholic over insomnia nor do you want to accidentally overdose because of it. "

" 4 beers at night and you're how old and you take the medication when? When the alcohol is out of your system? Too close.
Also, if you are underage you should not be drinking period. I've had very bad insomnia but have talked to doctors about it. Meds and alcohol don't mix. We can fool ourselves into thinking we're being sensible when we really aren't. "

" My advice then is to not drink to relieve insomnia. You're life will be misery if you don't find another way to sleep. I'm only saying this to help you. "

" Drinking to get to sleep will progress. It'll take more booze to make you relax as time goes on.I couldn't sleep the night through without a drink of liquor every 2 hours. After being off alcohol for about 2weeks I began sleeping normally. One big thing, especially for young people is to get up at a reasonable hour.Don't sleep half the day away.Set a time to get up and stick to it.Most likely in a few days a normal sleep pattern will develop. If not maybe see a doctor. If you want to stop drinking, stop completely.Cutting back or weaning won't work for an alcoholic. If you have trouble stopping completely when you decide to,maybe you've got a problem.
