I was totally prepared for kindergarten registration, I even had a list of 15 questions to ask the teacher and reading coach and after the first two questions I didnt see the point in finishing.
1: Do you have a book list?
2: Can you recommend some books?

No to both, they told me to talk to him and to teach him a few nursery rhymes. Duh! talk to him are they kidding? The READING COACH cant think of a single book to recommend, and they dont have books that they use often enough for a reading list. Give me something. Dick and Jane, Dr. Suess what ever, Im not trying to jumpstart my child and get him ahead of the class but I would like to read him books that would compare to what they will be reading in school, really just so I can gauge his understanding of stories and at what level he should be comprehending. Is it too much to ask for ?
Im scared to death now that our school will be teaching close enough math. Its ridiculouse. And were in the best school district in the entire Valley.
Sorry, I just know that my son is going to have a hard time reading, he thinks we read from right to left even when your showing him, I guess I just wasnt prepared for such dumbfounded expressions.

" Thanks ladies, my son is eager to read, but has a hard time and gets frustrated, I remember dying to read in kindergarten, I was just so surprised that the school was unable to answer a few questions that I would expect any parent to ask, they just kept looking at me like why would she ask that, or what do you mean BOOKS?
I dont know, I guess I just expected more. "

" I had little guidence also. If they gave you a list of "wall words" look for books that use those words a lot - simple books like Dr. Suess. They also learn about rhyming words so book with that are good. If your child is hesitant about going to kindergarten, there is a really cute book about a racoon going to school - it is called "The Kissing Hand". The teacher recommended it to me - wish I had it before school started. They never emphasized any particular books but said read read read! So any reading is worth the time. "

" Actually, the Reading Coach was right on. As a reading specialist we have studied that children who are talked to actually have a better chance of having an expanded vocabulary. This builds their background knowledge on different subjects and helps to increase comprehension. Get books your child is interested and reread them. this will help your child recognize the words that are used over and over again will will help them start reading. ask for a list of high frequency words also "

" My son is in 2nd grade now, but I was were you are a few years ago. Don't worry about the right to left thing-my son was the same way and he is now reading on a 5th grade level. He did really well with books about super heroes and Dr Seuss. He also loved "I'll Love You Forever"-he actually memorized it, lol. You will be blown away at the change in him by this time next year. The leveled readers are great in 1st grade. As far as a reading list, our school was no help, but our library had a wonderful one and they have a great summer reading incentive program-you may want to sign up for this summer too! "
