My sons day camp has this notion that trying to reason with an upset 5 year old is acceptable.

The result they get is a kid that is MORE upset.

Am I insane to think that trying to talk it out with a upset 5 year old is to much to expect?

" I think it depends on the child and the situation. If a child is visibly upset, it's very difficult to reason with him/her. However, that doesn't mean it's okay to just let a child sit there and throw a tantrum or disrupt a group. In any given situation, I think it's best to try and find out why the child is upset, calm him/her down and then try to find a solution. Five year olds are old enough to understand rules (though following them, may be more difficult) and I think it's appropriate to remove a child from a situation if he/she is having a difficult time. Sorry, if this sounds harsh... but I also don't know the entire situation. "
