sex after a vaginal birth

I was wondering if it is suposed to hurt the first time you have sex. We have waited until the Dr. said it was all okay. I did have an epesiatomy and it has healed well. But when we had sex it was very uncomfortable. Does it take a while for your sex life to get back to normal>

" Yeppers.....esp since you had an episiotomy. I tore pretty bad with DD1 and I remember to this day how bad it hury when I went to the bathroom for the first time after birth. We also waited until the doc gave us the ok to have sex and I pretty much told DH to "just hurry and get it done with"...for real, that's what I told him.

It will get better, just make sure to use lots of lube for the next few times. "

" I had an episiotomy with my first and tore with my second so I know the discomfort. I too waited for the doc to say all was okay and did not have any problems. I think you just need to be really comfortable, communicate well with partner about what you are feeling...who says it has to be full intercourse? And of course lots of foreplay and lube will help! "

" Yeah it hurts. With my first baby it hurt for about a year (i had a tear that was not stitched properly) but this time around it only hurt for 3-4 times, its still uncomfortable but no pain. Maggielooop is right lube, it helps especially if you cant produce enough yourself. "

" My baby just turned 3 months and it still hurts. I'm BFing so it's dry, but we use lots of lube. It feels like I have a major paper cut where I tore. I hope it gets better really soon! "

" Yep, it hurts at first (and I didn't even have the epiostomy!) It does get better though, friends I have talked two have said it have take anything from 6 weeks to a year. With me it took about 2 months and a talk to my husband about being gentle or being a very lonely boy :) "

" Yes, I had an episiotomy, doctor said everything was okay after 6 wks...and then it outright BURNED when we first had sex again. I just hated it, and hubby's feelings were hurt. But after about 5 months, right before I got my period again, sex was all of a sudden great! So in the meantime be patient, be honest with hubby, use something like Astroglide, and maybe try positions you find most comfy until your body heals from growing and pushing out a whole human being!
