normal spit-up?

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding spitting up. My daughter is five weeks old and she is my first.

She seems to spit up a lot. Sometimes right after eating, everything comes back up. She spits up throughout the day whether she has eaten or not. My pediatrician didn't seem too concerned, but I have never seen a baby spit up everything they ate so frequently. There is no pattern to when she spits up. Some days it is after every feeding, while other days it is only after one or two feedings. She spits up in her sleep even.

My daughter is exclusively breastfed, so a formula issue isn't at hand.

Any suggestions or experiences? Thanks so much.

" Emma spits up only when she is over feed. Sometimes when she is very gassie she will act like she is hungry but in reality she isn't se is only acting like this for comfort. When this happens i rock her for 15-20 minutes if she is still crying and acting out hunger than i feed her again. But my peds dr. told me a lot of spit up could be due to over feeding. Each baby is different. I hope i helped. "

" I think every baby spits up quite a bit. My girls spit up alot when thew were smaller. Its not much now, but Olivia, my little piggy does seem to overeat sometimes and then she will spit up. Babies can be lactose intoerant too, so she may have an issue with breastmlk (I hope not!) If she is still gaining weight and your ped thinks she looks good, I wouldn't worry too much, just invest in lots of burp cloths! "

" Thanks girls. I think I am really looking for reassurance that she isn't spitting up too much. Right now we are working on the theory she is overeating and her system is still immature. So I am watching her intake and keeping her upright when feeding and after feedings. I have seen some improvement, but we are only on day three of the new feeding techniques. "

" Sounds like Noah, My pediatrician wasn't concerned either. I guess it's more of a laundry problem then a medical one! I hope he grows out of it soon! "

" My son does the same thing. The only reason I'm not worried is he is gaining plenty of weight, and I've been through this before with my first son. I also exclusively breastfeed, so with my first son I was always trying to figure out what I was eating that was causing it. Never pinpointed anything, so this time I haven't even tried. My oldest spit up so long he actually used to crawl through it (yuck, I know). The only thing I've read to help this with breastfed babies is to let them eat as long as they want off the first breast before switching sides - I guess is easier on their tummies to get more hind milk and less of the first milk that comes out, which has more lactose I think. As long as your daughter is gaining weight, I think she'll be fine - you're the one suffering with all the extra laundry and wearing smelly shirts that have been spit up on! Does she seem gassy? Mylicon drops helped my boys seem more comfortable, but I'm not sure they lessened the spit up. "

" part of it also could be that she is not burped enough....I had a friend tell me once that breastfed babies dont need burped because they burp themselves....she stuck by it and her lil girl has major gas issues now...i never breastfed my lil girl so i dont know exactly how it works but try burping her a lil more it may help with the room in her tummy to hold it down better. " If she is gaining adequately and isn't in pain, I wouldn't worry about it. My first daughter spit up all the time. I had a stack of 20 bibs always on hand, and no, I'm not kidding. For the first 8 months of her life, she had a bib on every picture! I had to replace our family room rug eventually. We called her Mount Vesuvius or Old Faithful. But she wasn't in any pain ( I was concerned about GERD), she had no problem gaining, so other than the clean up... I didn't think about it much. "
