I am breastfeeding my 2 week old daughter and have been burping her between breasts. About 1 hour later she sometimes will cry like she needs to burp more, but I can't get anything out of her. Any advice? Also has anyone her of Mycylon (spelling?) I guess drops for gas? Anyone tried it with any success?
thanks! Posted on 06/10/08, 08:06 pm |

milecon (sp still lol) works wonders.
It might be worth talking to your doctor though. My baby did that on formula and she had to switch to a lactose free kind because she was lactose intolerant. Breastmilk contains lactose as well. There might be lactaid drops that you can use for babies but I don't know. Talk to your doc.

you may need to actually cut out eating milk products maybe. i did for my daughter but she was actually allergic to the protein. or it may be another food causing the gas. onions broccoli and some other veggies made my girl gassy so i cut those out too.
as well about 2 weeks old is when colic apears isnt it? im not sure hayls usually had a reason for her crying. (reflux and gas from stuff i ate) there is also infant massage techniques that should help relive the gas as well as help bonding =) i have to do it now because she is constipated all the time now since introducing solids. it helps relax her quite a bit.

breastfeed baby's are harder to burp. sometimes between breast my baby doesnt burp and is upset cause he wants more. I can burp him for an hour and nothing then put him down and nothing untill an hour later he crys cause the burp needs to come out. There are times when he does burp and an hour later he crys cause he still has gas. The gas drops work great but mostly I just spend the time holding him and trying to make him feel better. Just cause your baby does this doesnt mean there is anything wrong. I have figured out spacific foods give him gas though, like chinise food so maybe keep a diary of what you eat and if baby has gas from it or not.

I actually tried Gripe Water and that seemed okay, but then I switched to Mylicon drops and that worked very well!
Try eating a bland diet for a day and see what happens. If it goes well, start adding foods back into your diet and write everything down that way you can start to pinpoint of anything is bothering her. Good luck!

I sometimes have to lay my little girl down for a few mins. and then when I see she starts to get uncomfortable and her eyes wide open. That is when I usually know she's ready to burp. Also, she tries to make my husband and mother think she doesn't need to burp, because she hates to get burped and will holler. But mommy knows better. I will burp her until I hear one or until 5 mins pass.

I read that to lower gas you can feed on one breast only at each feeding b/c the hind milk has less lactose then the foremilk. So they'll be less gassy.

Breastfed babies don't get as much air as a bottle fed baby therefore, may not burp as often. Is she making an "EH" sound? If so that is a burp.. or is it a "Eairh" sound.. almost like "air". That is lower gas pain. Usually a baby won't cry when they need to be burped.. now fuss or squirm perhaps but usually crying is lower gas pain. Watch her body language as well.. is she pulling her legs up to her tummy and has a terrible painful type look on her face? If so that is lower gas. After going through three "windy" babies, I know how frustrating it can be but there are things you can do once you figure out what she is trying to tell you. The only way I can really burp Caden is when I kind of rock him back in forth by sitting him up and laying him down over and over.. this also helps with his lower gas. Also, giving him a tummy (while he is on his back)or lower back (while he is on his tummy)massage helps as well. Working with his legs.. like riding a bike helps as well. There are other tricks to try if you need them, let me know. Gas drops work in most cases for lower wind.. not to be burped.. they didn't with my second.. only made him worse but he was allergic to dairy and soy even through breastmilk so he wasn't normal.

I was told by my sis in law (who is a lactation consultant) that sometimes they wont burp when they are breast fed and that is ok, as long as they dont get hysterical with gas pain. I used to put Ariana on her belly and that would sometimes do the trick.. also putting a little bounce in your step while rubbing her back in circles going from lower back to upper back. I use ovol drops first thing in the morning and again mid day (half the dosage each time) and that has helped alot. Good luck!
