Still waking up every 2-3 hours

Help! My son is five months old and still waking up every 2-3 hours in the night. It's like he's a newborn again. When he reached 2 months, he actually went through this miraculous phase where he still went to bed late, but then slept until 6 am, then woke up every two or three hours until 11:30 am. That was actually a GOOD phase for us.
But at around 3 months until now, he's decided to wake up every 2-3 hours again, all night long. We've tried everything--letting him cry it out for a while (he won't go back to sleep without a snack); putting his crib in another room; feeding him right before bed; trying to let him sleep with a pacifier. The only thing we haven't tried is giving him solids, which doctor doesn't recommend. Will this phase ever end? Other women tell me about their babies who started sleeping 5-6 straight hours in the night since 1,2,3,4 months...and I just want to weep!! Posted on 04/09/08, 02:04 pm |

you are not alone!!!
my first baby was sleeping through the night (8 hours) at 4 weeks. YAY... well, he spoiled me! My daughter was NOT a sleeper. She would only sleep through the night after she got her shots at the doctors. She slept between 20 minutes and 4 hours at night... up and down, up and down... and would at the most have a 9 hour night. She only took a couple 10 minute naps in the daytime... She made me so exhausted! i cried because i was so tired. Well... about the time she turned a year.. she all of a sudden started wanting to go to bed at a certain time.. and then sleep. She started by getting up once, then after 2 weeks, we made her self-soother back to sleep (the video monitor helped us) Anyway... by 13 months she was sleeping 10 hours at night and started taking 2 hour naps on a schedule. a schedule!!! that was a dream come true!! Now she is over 14 months. She asks to go night night around 6-630pm and wakes up at 615-715am. she rouses at night, but we watch her in the monitor and she goes back to sleep without us going in there. She also sleeps from 1230-230 in the afternoon. It should get better. Sounds like yours is active! make sure to burp him often during and after feeding- it makes a difference.

I just got my 4 month old to pretty much sleep through the night. He was also waking up 2-3 times a night and so I did try the crying to sleep method a few nights and it broke my heart every time. So now I start my bedtime routine at 7pm (bottle, bath then bed). I did got the Fisher Price remote control mobile that lights up the crib, plays music and also shines figures on the wall and this seems to get him to sleep, with pacifier and blanket. Then when he wakes up at 1 or 2 am I go in to check on him (no lights and no talking) cover him up, pacifier in mouth and that seems to get him back to sleep. Whatever you do, don't pick him up or its all over. You may want to increase the bottle to a larger size so he goes to bed full. It's not an easy process and I am just getting the hang of it myself. Good Luck!

Is he getting enough to eat during the day? You could maybe start introducing solids later in the day..that might help him sleep through the night.
Our pediatrician said they should be between 7-8 kilos for solids. If baby needs more food, then baby needs more food, no matter what your PED says (i'm not trying to know your ped down, but everyone has their own opinion)

I literally just signed on to write the EXACT SAME post!! It seems like my son is regressing.. he used to sleep 4 to 5 hrs at a time but the last 4 days its been every two hours all over again!!!! I thought maybe he was teething? Its like he is wide awake! Anyways.. I have no solution but it sure made me feel better to read that your 5 month old is doing the same thing mine is (also 5 months)

My first child slept through the night at 1 month!!! But my second is totally different. I've just been able to get him into a routine where I put him for a nap at 830 or 900 and then he has lunch at 12 and down again at 100. Some times he wants another nap around 400 so he gets one but I put him to bed around 7-730, some nights he'll sleep until 11 and get up to drink, but i've realized that if I make him finish his bottle at supper then he usually wakes up around 3-4 am. then he'll sleep until 630-7. That is better than he used to do. So things will get better. I'm like you, he is sleeping in his crib in with me and my husband but we have no choice, we live with the inlaws in a 3 bedroom home. I just wish he would sleep through the night so that I can get some sleep too. I hope once we get into the house and he has his own room that he will.

I'm sorry I am of no help BUT I *am in the same boat. My daughter is almost ten months. She wakes up every hour and a half to three hours in the middle of the night. She naps for 10-45 minutes tops during the day. I believe it is 98% teething related. We both are having such an awful time. Talked it over w/her pedi and he said it IS most likely teething related. *sigh*
I just hope the light shines in sooner than later in this dark tunnel! Good luck getting your son to sleep. It's tough!! Remember that he will only be this small once.

This is so funny because my son is almost 5months and he's gone back to the newborn stage except he doesn't take naps. I finally got him to nap yesterday after he cried non stop no matter what for 2hrs. All I've ever heard for advise was get him on a schedule and in a couple weeks it'll stop. I've been doing it but it doesn't seem to work but IU'm going to keep trying it. If you get any really good advice please please please let me know.

I know docs don't recommend it, but full satisfied babies sleep longer. I started both my girls on rice cereal between 5 and 6 months. The first few times I gave it to them during the day so I could watch for any bad reactions. I mixed it with formula and made it really watery.
Sometimes moms know best. I never suggest doing anything but feeding and attending to babies under 5 months. But if your little one is sitting up and active I say give it a try. During the day first, then if all goes well, at bedtime after the bath. I'll bet he'll sleep really well for you. Oh, if you choose to try the rice cereal don't overdue it. Once a day and really watered down. If you give him too much too fast he could get constipated. Good luck

just curious when ur babies started sleeping thru the night. and did it happen on there own or did u do something …
Perhaps I am being overly-sensitive, but I think I'm justified. You tell me: I understand that people, or at least …
