Sleeping to much?

My daughter is 5 weeks old, and it seems like she sleeps all the time. She has a few awake periods per day, but is usually fussy. I often have to wake her to breastfeed after 3 or 4 hours, but I HATE waking her when she's so restful. I spend all day worrying that she won't sleep much at night, but she usually sleeps fine at night (she only wakes up once most nights) despite sleeping most of the day. Is this normal?

" I'm not a professional but I nursed my first one and I didn't wake him up. My thought is that they will wake up if they are hyngry. She may even be awake more if you let her wake up for feedings. "

" my baby was very sleepy and from day one has been on semi demand cus if left to her when given a choice of sleep or eat she takes sleep. and often cant catch up later. she even lost 3 oz in one night due to this.

she started sleeping thru the night recently and again isnt gaining well. she has gerd so its very hard to push in the feedings she needs to gain weight properly throughout the day.

and seriously many times when i have woken her to feed her she ate just as well as when i didnt so she was obviously hungry. but ya her dad is the same way.

some babies have special needs when it comes to eating and only you and your doc can determine if waking the baby up is needed. for us it is.

as for how much your babe sleeps mine slept 24-7 till 4-5 months old. she even was asleep when she ate most of the time. she roused for food every 2-4 hours but by the time i got there she was fast asleep. so we would put the bottle in her mouth and she would sleep suck.

but ya do what is right for you and dont let anyone tell you its wrong! i let one friend get to me and went to full demand and she platued for weight gain. i have found she doesnt cry until she is STARVED. so i fed her when she made the 'eh eh' noise otherwise she would spit up cus she would eat too much "

" I don't know if you are still worried about this since your post is from a couple weeks ago, but my son slept constantly the first couple months. I was worried since he was sleeping so much more than his 2 older brothers did, but now that he is over 3 months, he is awake a lot more. "

" Make sure to get baby weighed to make sure she's gaining enough. You also want to watch out for jaundice.
Other than that, let her sleep. It's pretty normal for babies to want to sleep most of the time at that age. "
