My son is 10 days old.
First, I have been asking people to wash their hands before holding him. Most people are very understanding about it but some people seem to be offended. Is there some special way I should be saying it to keep them from being offended? All I say is wash your hands first please or something along those lines. I feel like some people think that I'm being overprotective because I want them to wash their hands. We wash ours all the time too. Second, some of our family and friends smoke...that's their choice, but I don't want Jaxon to be around it. At our house we can have our own rules, but what do you do when you go to their house? We were visiting family yesterday and they stand at the door when they smoke.Most of it goes outside but some of it comes in. What can I do? Thanks for your advice. Posted on 05/12/08, 04:05 pm |

First off, this is your child. If people want to be offended if you ask them to wash their hands, thats their problem! I would just say "Since Jaxon is so young, please wash your hands as babies can get sick easily" The smoking thing. I would polietly ask them not to. Tell them you understand that that is their house, but you dont want Jaxon to be around that. If they object, leave. You are just protecting your baby.

When I had my eldest my MIL came to visit me and DD at the hospital. She picked up DD and I reminded her to go wash her hands!!! So she put DD down and did so. That night she came down with a nasty stomach virus and guess what DD caught? YEP the stomach virus so she had to stay an extra day in the hospital. So whatever you have to do, and who ever you offend, let it roll off your shoulder. Just make sure they wash their hands.

Thanks again for all your replies. I have gotten a little less frantic about the hands. Friends that smoke are usually polite enough to wash without being asked and those that are sick stay away from him. Our family and friends that are around him all the time I am not so strict about anymore, but he is also older now and more resiliant than before. As to the new mom thing...yes this is my first child, however a lot of my hand washing habbits are also due to the fact that I worked with infants at a daycare for over a year and I am in the habbit of washing hands religiously.
As for the smoking luckily we don't have to go to James parents very often. Actually we've only been up there once since my post and I blatently covered his head with the blanket and blew the smoke away. James has to go up there to help them since they have paid our rent for the past two months and he can't drive so I have to take him up there. Dropping him off isn't really an option since it's over an hour away. I am just trying to avoid it as much as possible and have been fairly successful with it. I think I will work up the words to speak to them about it soon, but for right now we haven't been going up there and when they come here they know our rules. Thanks again for the replies.
