ADHD Inattentive Type

My 8 year old son has ADHD inattentive type and was diagnosed when he was 6 years old. He is really bright and seems to have what he needs to know in his head for tests but when test time comes, he freezes. Also, he daydreams and misses important cues when the teacher is talking then feels self conscious about asking for help.
He is on medication - 20 mg of Adderall XR daily but it is killing his appetite and my husband and I are concerned about his weight and growth. We have met with his teachers and counselor (every year since kindergarten) and he is on a 504 plan. Nevertheless, homework zaps me of my energy trying to get him to stay focused and complete it every night. He doesn't seem to have any hyperactivity on the medication and can sit still but still zones out during class time. Anyone out there with similiar issues? Anything that seems to help? My son is in 2nd grade and very frustrated. I don't want him to hate school - he has WAY too many years left of it! Help! Posted on 10/09/07, 05:10 pm |

How long has he been on his meds? I know with me I have needed several adjustments. Also when you are doing homework with him make sure there are no distractions, no radio, tv, toys etc etc. Make sure you give him short breaks where he can rest/play. Set a timer for say 15 minutes and have him focus for that time. At the end give him 5 minutes away from the homework. It will give him something to work for and it will also give you a much needed hiatus so you can keep your patience.
Good luck!!

Hi,my son is 11 now....I've haven't had to put him on meds yet.....I have bipolar,ocd,add...so with my four kids I do see signs. The 11 yr. old has always showed signs of add.....in the younger grade it was very hard to get him to do homework.....having four kids I've made mistakes and learned along the way. With my older son....he always wanted to have loud music when he was doing his homework....which I thought was wrong....well since then my 11 yr. has been doing all his homework on his own...he loves to do it in front of the tv....I know it sounds bad but it works....it seems to block out all the other things for him......well just a thought...take care

that is really interesting, about blocking out all the other things...I am fully grown (and more..lol) but I find music when I am working at something is very good - but couldnt take the heavy metal type...lol - but the music, fills my mind from other distractions that might pop in...

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll try to play some music to see if that helps and also time him then give breaks. I'm also meeting with his pediatrician to see if we may need another adjustment or switch meds.

We have also added breaks to my sons' homework time. It seems to help him get it done with less of a battle. We also give him a reward of staying up for a few more minutes if he gets it done in a certain amount of time.

You might consider a tutor also. this would be a person that is not you to help him with his homework--my daughter fights with me when I try to help her with homework. But, she listens to the tutor, who knows more than me. I don't care that she thinks this--I just want her to learn and if this is what it takes...
Tutors are expensive, try and see if your school has somthing is place that your son would be elible for. And, really stay on the teacher about this. I had a teacher tell me that my daughter will probably lose some ground over the summer, so I should get a tutor for her (for the summer.) The tutor tested her--she was functioning at a first grade level going into 4th grade. Tell me this did not affect her wanting to learn, her ego, her socializing with her classmates. They called her names like "lazy", she thinks she is "stupid". We started tutoring, and she is learning --filling in the holes she had that didn't allow her to keep up with her class. the school this year is talking about placing her in a group with extra help. this is after I gave them a copy of the tutor's placement test. If you cannot afford a tutor, you might check into just getting your son a placement test. sorry, I am rambling.
