I have a seven year son who was just last year dx with adhd, The doctor had him on concerta, strattera to counteract side effects of stratterra and remeron for sleep and depression. I have recently stopped the meds and have him taking a natural vitamin called attention and also flax oil, he is doing somewhat better but still lacks the abilities of any child dx with this disorder. I have heard so many bad things about prescribed meds, Im scared to have him on anything. On the concerta he was not eating, he was unable to sleep and he got very depressed could not even do work fo 30 second let alone six hours. he is not learning disabled and the school just says there is nothing they can do except to put him in another large group still with no one on one. Im reaaly struggling on what to do. It seems like the only answer drs. and schools have are drugs. please if anyone has any suggestins im very open to them.

Perhaps he just has a different learning style than the schools can deal with? May I suggest homeschooling? My daughter was put on Concerta, and gained weight rapidly. (Did I mention that my daughters were taken away by CPS?) There are plenty of options out there other than dangerous drugs (I should talk, I'm on Straterra and Focalin).

I have a 14yrs old with ADHA and this was determined when he was 9yrs old so I've been dealing with this issue for a while. I'm constantly looking for answers since I'm told there's no cure. I recently saw a commercial and called for some free information which seemed to give me a little insight. It was from Shire Pharmaceuticals. The material lets you know that you're not alone and children with ADHD aren't all the same. The medications may cause side effects for some and none for others. They also state that the treatment that was first presented as helpful may not be so helpful now. They say because your child grows and changes their needs also change. For more info on keeping up with ADHD go to www.adhdprogress.com This will also tell you that there are different types of ADHD which I was never told about. ADHD Inattentive Type(once referred to as ADD), ADHD Hyperactive/Impulsive Type(less common), and ADHD Combined Type and they state this that is the most common type. I hope this info is helpful. We've got to stick together.

Hi there. My 9 yo was doing ok with Concerta (36mg) but was still hyper so we switched her to Adderall (10mg) but it does not seem to be working. I share your concern about putting them on meds. I have tried all the herbal meds for ADHD that Vitamin Shoppe sells but nothing works. I feel your frustration and I wish I could offer anything but I don't - I guess that's why I joined this group to seek some answers or support. My prayers are with you and your child.
