Seeing through my questionnaire that I was a moody little runt with insomnia, my doctor wanted to put me on a tiny dosage (2.5mg) of Zyprexa for about a week before starting stimulants. He didn't want the stimulants to exacerbate any mood swings (saying I had a "clinical mood disorder").
I'm wary because it's an antipsychotic and I also thought my moods came from good reasons (I'm just very passionate), and I wouldn't want to change that, but he said it should calm me down a bit. Has anyone tried this stuff before? Should I be concerned? Posted on 11/20/08, 03:11 pm |

Yes Rodent, I have used it as a mood stabiliser.
Only my experience and the information I know about this medication. Not telling you what to do, but maybe ask the Doctor a few more questions. Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic, intitially used for schizophrenia and psychotic disorder. In recent years it has been used in treating mood disorders, such as, Bi Polar and manic depressive disorder ect. There are a number of legal actions against the manufacture, Lilly. An adverse side affect is excessive weight gain and has recently been linked to diabetes 1 in patients. My experience was negative, I was unmotivated, no personality and a veracious appetite(especially sweets) 14kg increase in weight in 2 1/2 months. Sleeping was unatural, lights off (night)lights on (morning)affect. I had a 5 1/2 week stay in a Private hospital with extreme withdrawals from Zyprexa. Not everyone has withdrawals from it(google zyprexa withdrawals and look for a site with peoples withdrawal symptoms and experiences with Zyprexa). It is a seriously strong antipsychotic med. 2.5mg is a the lowest dose prescribed. At the Private Hospital everyone who was or had been prescribed Zyprexa were obese or over weight. The Psychiatrist and 1 Professor were taking everyone off Zyprexa and replacing it with Seroquel(also has weight gain to a lessor degree),Lamictal etc. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Well, never mind then. I took it last night and I had the same sleeping experience except I never wanted to really get up because my whole body felt weighed down. Oh, well...at least they were free.

I was put on it as a mood stabilizer, since my long-time antidepressant, Lexapro, wasn't working anymore and Zyprexa was supposed to give it a "boost."
Whew, what a disaster -- for ME, anyway. 1) knocked me out of this world 2) gained 20 pounds in a month 3) raised BP to dangerous levels. Have read that weight gain and rise in blood pressure is very, very common. There is so much weight gain that this drug has been linked to diabetes. Lovely stuff. Still doesn't mean that it will do this to YOU. Everyone is different, after all. I can't take stimulants, period. Yet every new specialist I go to tries to prescribe them. Doctors need to listen and you need to write down your reactions and make sure your doctor listens. Good luck with the med.
