i absolutely cannot follow conversations. and i know this can be an add thing, but this is what i experience: someone talks to me about something that i don't feel has any significant importance and i'm disinterested in the topic so then i don't know how or what to say to keep the conversation going-my mind goes dead. i don't even know how to act. this happens a lot at work when my co-workers try to make small talk with me. i must be the most boring person to talk to! i just get so confused asking myself: okay, what now? then i just want to end the situation so i find an excuse to get away. what is my problem?

You are not alone with feeling this way. I know it can be difficult at times.

My son is 20 and has this same problem, he doesn't understand it either. Just another annoying symptom of adhd and very frustrating from what I hear from him. He doesn't have one friend in the world and it breaks my heart, he lives with us, walks around all day, talks to himself, and I really have to call him back a couple of times when I'm talking to him as his mind wanders a lot. I know him so well tho, and I guess he feels safe just talking to me. However, I hope someday he find someone else who knows him and helps him out with conversation and has patience when he loses interest. Focus is so difficult with this problem.

An ADD/ADHD mind is always "looking for a good time" and unfortunately when the stimulant isn't exciting or doing the job then the mind wanders even though the heart may wish to be there. That's how I can best describe what it feels like. Take some time to reflect and make baby steps at self discipline or explore medication options. I noticed I can pay attention better with Adderall XR, although I still have momentary lapses or spells of completely checking out just not as often. :) LOL I feel your pain, I have co-workers who love small talk and I am stuck in one room with about 8 of them for 11 hours... I feel like I am "paroled" when it comes time to go home... LMAO!

I hear that. I have a hard time not interupting people and talk too much. Am just not listening most of the time. Hard to focus.

I do this too but have no answer to it. I am hoping to trial medication and am hoping this will help.
I feel that if my response is an impulsive one I'm ok but if I have to think about my answere it gets lost in my head. I also get anxious about needing to answer so my brain gets stubborn and I can sit ther thinking... 'I know what to say but it's too late now, they'll think I don't mean it, but they thinbk I'm being rude nor saying it, I can't though now it's too late, now it's even later, now it's even later, maybe I should say something different instead, but what, oh I know, but now it's too late to say that too' I exhaust myself! I'm good at creating distractions/diverting their attention!

this is just soo difficult....I find my mind wanders as well - but for some reason people talk to me!! ... I tend to ask questions as I am interested in people. I do find sometimes people dont ask questions of other people and keep the conversation going. Does this happen do you think, or do you think it is because it is tedious...lol.........I know I can be looking as though I am listening and umming and ahhhing while thinking of something else and have to gradually find myself back to what the person is talking about. Oh dear! If you LOOK interested and ask questions, things do change? Perhaps this is not what you mean, though....and am being thoroughly not knowing about this..?? take care...do try the looking concerned and asking questions? think I am off the ball here...rambling.....oh dear! ADDDDDDD...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi spacy, That sounds a l lot like Asperger's syndrome as well as ADHD. You are not alone because I can relate to you too. I have a habit of interupting people at time and sometimes I talk to much. I also don't do small talk either. Take Care. Dawn

hello again ... after reading everyone's comments, I feel the same way. I actually try hard to be interested in other people & try hard to pay attention & try hard to say all the appropriate responses ... I usually can pull it off but then I feel exhausted.

And here I thought I was the only one!! LOL I'm in school right now, and if the professor has a power point slideshow and just talks, no matter how hard I try, I can't draw myself in. It's too impersonal, and like someone said before, my mind is searching for stimulation and not getting it. One thing that I do when in conversation with someone is watch them...observe their body language, notice what words they emphasize, things like that. Then I can comment on that and start to divert their attention to something that interests me as well, so then I feel more alert in the conversation. You may not be able to connect with the other party on their ground, but at least you can try to draw them on to your conversational turf. I hope this helps!
