I posted this on the Autism group, but am looking for any advice I can get.
My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and ADHD (Hyperactivity). Currently he takes MetadateCD, but he is havign more difficulties in school with his behavior. We tried to increase the dosage, but it made him more restless. I spoke with his Pdoc, and we dropped him back down to the previous dosage. His doctor feels that it is time to try a different med. He suggested Vyvanse, Focalin or Aderal (SP?). I have been doing research on these meds, but feel like my head is spinning at this point. Do any of them treat both PDD-NOS (mainly Asperger's symptoms) and ADHD? If you have experience with any, or all of them, would you mind sharing? Thank you, Lori Posted on 11/16/08, 09:11 am |

Don't have any knowledge on Asperger's... but I am taking Adderall XR for my ADHD and as an adult I can tell you it works pretty well. I take a low dose in the morning and it lasts all day. Had a upset stomach for a few days when I first took it but that wore off in a week or so. It certainly helped with my anxiety and doesn't interrupt my sleep. Helps me to not feel the need to be doing 80 things at once... :D
It certainly doesn't make me as moody or cause abstract thoughts like I had with Metadate or Straterra. Everyone is different though and it will take a while to find him the right medication to meet his needs. I'm sure your Dr can tell you if it will treat both.

I have had to change my sons medicine several times in the last few years and every time the medicine seems to no longer be working it does get very frustrating. We just started Vyvance yesterday so I can't tell yet whether it will work or not but today at school he did better. I ask him how he felt today when I picked him up and he seemed positive about it. It is a very hard decision to medicate your child. I have came to the conclusion that although people have strong opinions about medicating children I will always do what I feel will make his life better. I would say to change his medication if you feel it can improve his and your quality of life.
