My husband wants the Dr. to.....

My husband wants me to talk to the Dr. about lowering the dose of the twins concerta? They are on 54 mg and have been for a few years now and doing really well. I have just been thru a lot with my son and his diagnoises that I am feeling a little bit more like I can exhale and breath again.
If the girls are doing well on the medications and thier grades and attitudes haven't gotten worse. Should we really think about lowering the dose. I guess the ledgeond about Ritalin from years ago may still lay heavy on his mind. He doesn't like the kids being on medication. But like I keep telling him. If they are doing so well do we really want to take the risk of taking them off or lowering the dose and having real trouble on our hands. I guess antoher big part of it is that the Concerta is a controlled substance and with him being a recovering addict for over 10 years and the twins being drug addict babies from thier biological mother. I can see where his concerns can be. Anything would be of help. Thanks so much, Cyndi Posted on 02/18/07, 03:02 pm |

Gosh Cyndi, that is a tough one. I can see clearly where your husband is coming from. I did alot of research on the whole 'put my kid on a controlled drug' thing too. :( But, he cannot function appropriately in school without it. Sooo, what I have done (am doing) to make myself feel better I went with the recommended mg from the Dr and when I found that worked i asked if we could down just one level and see if he still had the same benefits. Atleast now I know he is getting what he needs for school and no more. I dont give it to him on the weekends either. So there is less drug in his body and for fewer days of the week. But that would mean both you and hubby would have to compromise. you in that the girls may have a lower dosage ( I know that is scary when you know what you have is already working...) and him with the fact that they will still be on some smaller level of the drug some of the time. Ryan takes Ritalin LA 20 mg and does well. How old are the girls?

my husband had a hard time even starting our son on meds. If she is doing well - leave well enough alone. If she were a diabetic and things were going well - no one would think about changing things. It is funny how there is such a stigma on ADHD and depression meds....
I am sure you know - a lot of these things ARE DNA------and lots of these things dont just go away......It seems to me - having happy, level kids is much better strategy to fight future addiction - than if kids have UPS and DOWNS.....as they search for comfort

Thanks so much for the advice. My childern are 11,11,11, and 10. The twins being 11 and my son being 10.
My biggest scare is that if we even lower the dose I may just wind up in the hospital due to my diabeties. Then my husband will have to take care of the kids and with his heart (hardening of the arteries due to all the drugs he use to take) he wouldn't survive. Like I said I feel that I can finaly exhale and breath after all the things that have happened with my 10 year old son. My son has been in the hospital 2 times this year and I think finally they have figured out what he is. Thier finally diagnoises is ODD really bad. but he is doing better now. Thanks again, Cyndi
