Discussion:
ADHD increasingly common in older kids

Just found an article that was interesting. I linked to it on our site: http://www.everyminute.org/news.html

"More older children are being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder while the rate is holding steady for children under 12, according to a U.S. government report released Wednesday.

Some experts called the finding surprising, noting that most childhood diagnoses traditionally occur by age 11.

The study didn't investigate why the increase in one age group was so much higher than the other. It found the percentage of older children diagnosed with ADHD has been rising by four per cent each year."

Why do you think the diagnosis is rising in older children? At what age were you diagnosed with ADHD?

" My mom and I both think diet--all the junk that's in food these days that kids eat--has a lot to do with it. Perhaps chemicals build up in a child's system and that's why the symptoms don't come out until later. "

" The perceived rise in rates could be attributed to our ability to better diagnose the problem in this age group. It doesn't automatically mean we suddenly have this epidemic of teenaged children with ADD. The first line of the quote points this out -- more older children are being diagnosed.

Conversely, we have well-established diagnoses for the "under 11" crowd. We caught the "big wave" of new diagnoses years ago, so now the rate of change, the delta curve, has flattened.

If that's clear as mud, think of it this way: You buy a new car. Suddenly, it seems everyone is driving that same car. Where did they all come from? We didn't all buy the same car at the same time. No, the only thing that has changed is our perception.

Teenagers have always ADHD just like younger children. Why do you think there are so many "new" adult diagnoses now? Because doctors failed to perceive the symptoms because they wrongly believed that kids grew out of it. "

" Awesome response Mstelly! That is a really good way to put it. I was diagnosed just prior to my 14th birthday at 13 years of age. "
