Hi,
I am pretty sure that I have ADD. I have taken a few online evaluations to see if I could possibly have ADD. In every case the results were that I do have it. When I was kid my teacher's tried to convince my mom that I was in need of "Special Education". In my town that carries a terrible stigma and people think that if you are in Special Ed, then that means that you are stupid so of course she rejected that idea. They would tell her that I was not focused and not listening etc... My mom really is a great lady, she just did not know what to do. She worked with me all though school and I did fairly well considering the fact that my mind was changing channels most of the time. I even managed to get through college. I did not excel but my grades were not horrible. I learned a variety of ways to cope over the years, but I never addressed the actual problem. Now as an adult and without her to keep me in line I find that I am having an extremely difficult time in just about every area of my life due to my inability to focus or think clearly about one thing for long. I am 34 years old. Where do I start? What kind of professional should I see to get diagnosis and help? Many thanks in advance for any advice! Posted on 07/16/08, 01:07 pm |

Get tested by a profetional to see if you do have it. If you do it will be on paper and you can start proper treatment. I went to a therapist for my offical diagnose. I think regular dr's can do it too but I'm not sure.
I use many natural remedies to help with my ADHD as well as taking Stettera. It helped alot when I finaly accepted it.

Yes, get a professional diagnosis since you've stated that it has caused you some problems. I also highly recommend the book "Driven to Distraction".

Try www.add.org website and see if they have a
listing of medical professionals in you're area who specialise in AD/HD diagnoses and treatment. Plenty of helpful information on the site. Good place to visit.

Hi there!
I am new too! I have scheduled an appointment with a behavioral mental health clinic to see a specialist. I had to fill out a very in depth packet/questionnaire about my history and what not. I guess the evaluation is 6 hours long!!!!!!!! I had no idea. But it sounds like we have about the same past. I, as a kid, had never had documented ADHD. My mom was a drinker, so she did not see, or want to see, my issues a kid. So I was never about to get help as a kid. I did okay, barely passed through elementary school. I started really screwing up in HS and dropped out because no one cared if I did or not. I start college on the 1st of August, and I have never been treated for this disorder, and decided I should give it a go. I have my evaluation next wednesday. I can let you know how it went. Good Luck!

Thank you all so very much for your help:-) It is much appreciated! I am going to schedule a professional evaluation so that I can determine once and for all if I have ADD. Six hours is a long time for an evaluation but I really need to resolve this issue or at least be on my way to a solution.
Many thanks!
