I've recently come to the conclusion that the price of ADHD medication is ridiculous and often wonder how many people afford it, including myself even with insurance. So how do you afford your medication(s)? How much does your insurance cover? Do different insurance companies have different policies surrounding medications? What about the differences between the United States and Canadian insurance compaines and the medications approved in each country?
Share your stories! Rant about your medication nightmares and struggles with insurance companies or explain how easy it was to recieve a prescription. Elaborate how much you pay to recieve the treatment you need and express an opinion as to whether that price is fair. Posted on 06/29/08, 12:06 am |

my son is on vyvanse the insurance company would not pay because his age i had to pay for two months at $139. each i did an apeal so now i am working on getting reimbursed 70% for each month which is like $35. But after all that he was diagnosed with autism and tics which is a form of teretts syndrome it is very expensive. and with the new diagnoses i am sure it is possible i will have to start over with insurance co.

Hay here in Canada my children are on dexidrine right now and with 80% coverage i pay $6 for one and $11 for the other! But they are changeing to adderall xr and i called for 20 mg it will cost 103 dollars a month but with 80% coverage i will only pay at the most 20 some dollars! I think they charge way too much and it scares me on how much i am going to pay for me to get meds! My three oldest children are all on meds for adhd combined and my oldest is going for testing for asburgers so this is going to get pricey! good luck all and i hope everyone has good coverage!

I'm astounded by so many stories of people paying high prices for medication in the USA.
People have to opt for the the cheaper meds that are less effective(maybe more side effects)because of economics. In Australia prescriptions are heavily subsidised by the Federal government. I pay $28 for 200 tablets of stim medication. I think the most I have ever paid for medication in my life time is $36. If you are unemployed or ill you receive a Health care card. Most prescriptions only cost between $5 & $10.

I am 22. I take Adderall XR. I don't make a lot of money and of course I'm just starting out in the world. My medication is making it very difficult to do so. I have to pay $167/ mo for a 30 day supply. I can't afford insurance because it would take my whole paycheck and there would be no point. but my medications already take my whole paycheck so I guess its a no win situation.
I have looked into every single assistance program that I can think of, my mother and I have. Everything we've looked into has blown up in our faces. Its just not fair I tell you! I have gone to the health department and they said that they can't help me because I am an adult and they only help children. So I went to the company. I sent in my application for a patient assistance program. I waited a like 4 months only to find that the stupid program had closed. They sent me more information on Vyvanze. Unfortunately I've heard that the doctor won't let you change medication unless its for a good reason. So unless financial situation is a good reason to change it I'm sunk, and stuck paying for the rising price of it! If anyone can help me, give me any suggestions please mail me. I REALLY need some help here!!!

Check with your local agencies. Dept of workforce service can tell you about low insurance costs in your State. I think most insurance companys have to have a Drs. Note and the Test results. Sorry, can't remember the name of the test right now.
