Just diagnosed today

I just got the official diagnosis today of ADHD. My son age 19 is also adhd. I have read tons of stuff about kids with adhd but virtually nothing about adults with ADHD so am looking for literature about that. The diagnosis explains a lot. I am also bipolar type 2 and probably won't be taking meds for the ADHD as stimulants put me on the hypomanic side. Strattera is the only drug which I know of that is not a stimulant which is also used to treat adhd but my son had an adverse reaction to it and I'm not sure that even if my pdoc offered it as a suggestion that I would want to try it. If you've got this far thanks for listening.

" Welcome--I have ADD (without the hyperactivity). I'm 41 and just found out a few months ago that I have this. May I recommend the book "Driven to Distraction". I can't remember the author's name, but it's excellent to help people learn about ADD--also a book by same author titled "Delivered from Distraction" (which I've read some but need to get my own copy). That's pretty much for people who know they have ADD and ways to cope and get help. God blesss. "

" Welcome...I just read your post and wanted to give you the name of 2 books that really helped me alot. Delivered From Distraction (Hallowell & Ratey), and ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life (Kolberg & Nadeau). I am 39, mom of 5 girls, two of which are also ADHD (mostly inattentive-not so much hyperactive). They were diagnosed almost two years ago, and myself almost one year ago. I overwhelmed myself trying to research info. on adult adhd (it appears to be a "newish" concept...not as common as for children.) When I found these books (a suggestion by a therapist/counselor who did some of our testing), it really made a difference in my day to day "functioning", along with the help of Ritalin, of course. As a mom, I know how difficult even the mundane tasks of life are: remembering lunch money, what time each one has practice, who needs to be where, and where did I leave my car keys, and constantly apologizing for being late, or for the mess... Life always seems to be a three-ring circus.
I hope this helps...feel free to share more or ask questions, if need be. I didn't find this site until my bipolar diagnosis, which I think has been helpful, if for no other reason that to see that I'm certainly not alone in this journey.
Sorry for the length...I tend to chatter! :) "

" Welcome. I nearly bought out Amazon.com (not really) to research ADD (w/o hyperactivity) and Bipolar II. I also have anxiety/panic disorder. So that's how I'm learning about my disorders, what to expect, etc. I still have a lot of books to read. "
