My six year old son is ADHD. He has been on Concerta (was recently 54 mg) since this past July. In the last couple of weeks, he would come home from school, saying I need to call the doctor and get different meds because he starts feeling angry late mid-day. This past week-end we all went out of town and boy was he a handful to say the least. He was very aggresive and full of angry. Anyways, today he started on Adderall XR. He came home from school, very tired, very emotional! Has anyone experienced the changing of meds with this age? What should I expect in the days to come? I feel so guilty anyways about putting my little six year old on meds (Even tho I know he needs it) but to see him soooo sad breaks my heart...

I have heard, and have experienced, that when starting a new med, there is a week to get used to. Often see tired behavior, and emotional. So, give it some time to get into his system. The first week should tell all. After that, if you see the same, maybe lower the dose.

We tried ritalin, concerta, straterra and most recently adderall. They all made our daughter "angry". They all gave her terrible headaches and stomachaches. We recently took her off everything. She had been on meds for 8 years. It is very hard to give a child such a powerful med. I hated it everyday. I just didn't know what it would do to her in the future. We are doing the more natural approach-vitamins, DMEA, Lecithin, and Omega3. She is no longer ill, no headaches. She was off the meds for 8 months, back on for 4, and now off since Christmas. She was doing no better on the meds than off. In the past year she grew 7 inches total when off the meds, and gained weight. She looks better. She is no longer a zombie like she was on the meds. And finally has friends. The moodiness seems to be normal teenage stuff. We still struggle with school, concentration, but it is worth it to have her happier and feel better. Tutors help with the school work also. Each child is diferent- but it is worth talking to your doctor over and over and over to find a solution that works with your child.
good luck

I am really worried about my son taking medication for ADHD. He just started them last August. He is quite small for his age(13yrs.)already. He has been on Straterra (60 mg)last month. It helps him but not quite enough so dr. added 16mg of Concerta now.It keeps him alert during the day but he is quite angry and irritable. He also has more trouble going to sleep than before the medication. I want to try ATTEND. Anyone tried it?? How did you like it??
