5 Yr. Old Son Diagnosed with ADHD TODAY

Today, after a long and tedious progress since Anthony's birth in May of 2002, Anthony, has been diagnosed as a child with ADHD. My husband and I know this would be the outcome of all of the services our son gets...speech, occupational therapy, an aide in his classroom to help him with his coping/behavioral skills..and parent couseling. We are very happy that Anthony will be classified as a child with special needs/ADHD...going forward for his school career...he is entering kindergarten in september..and will be in the inclusion classroom meaning, he would have an aide, not the one from this year, but, an aide to assit him with his lack of skills to focus, attend in the classroom, cope with his peers, his listening skills, etc....my husband and I demanded in a nice, professional way, that our son get placed in the inclusion classroom, but, we needed an official diagnosis from a child psychiatrist..so, we took anthony to see the doctor today, after meeting with the doctor, and providing him with all the evaluations from all of anthony's therapists, teachers, etc..then the doctor spoke with anthony, asked him questions, observed him, and, came up with the diagnosis...so, this is what went on today, and, honestly, i feel like a weight has been lifted off of mine and my husbands back, BUT, at the same time, I am so afraid that my son will stick out with his peers, which he doesnt now, accept that he is REALLY TALL, for his age.

I probably should get a second opinion, right?! I am now thinking about this..my head is just spinning!

" That's great you have a diagnose....now it's time to find all you can about add. The more you understand add the more you can help and teach your son how to cope with add. Kids with add are usually very smart ....they just have to find their own way of learning. take care Zoey "

" Your story sounds just like mine and our boys are around the same age. I put my son in a private Kindergarten school, as he was a young Kindergartener and this year his symptoms have progresses fast! I contribute a lot of it from the teacher being unwilling to accept that he learns differently. We got him diagnosed 3 weeks ago and she argues with the diagnosis and I believe is damaging his ability to learn. We took him in for a second oppinion last week with a Psychiatrist and will find out his results next week. I'm so glad to hear that you have support from the school. We do not! And are on do strongly believe it depends greatly on the teacher and hopefully our son will do better repeating Kindergarten next year in a different school. Isn't this all to much sometimes? We as parents need the support of our teachers and say if you have that your boy will be on a good path from the start. Good Luck and keep us posted on his progress! "

" My 5 year old is undiagnosed - we are in australia and are currently undergoing the vial stigma of ADHD, so I am having SO much trouble getting anyone to even CONSIDER looking at him for it. Our doctor basically told me i wasnt a good mother and needed to learn how to deal with him (:O - i know - how screwed did I feel - like i was the reason he was behaving so poorly). So my mother and i went to behaviour modification classes, which helped a bit i guess - but its doesnt stop all the ADHD stuff that is what gets him in trouble at school. His school is asking for me to get him diagnosed and helped me write up a big report to send on to the doctors, but i have been told there is up to a year waiting list just for initial look :S :'( "
