Hi lovely people
My name is Vicki im 18, born in Melbourne Australia but now living in New Zealand. Had Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia, and drug addictions also Self Harmed and attempted suicide about 10 times. Every time i went to my social worker (this was from when i was 12-16) my family brought up do i have ADHD and can you please look into it because i was having such trouble at school, and in every single report it was said Vicki can do so much better, or she must concentrate in class she has the brains but too lazy etc. Every time my parents brought the chance that i may have ADHD it was dismissed nearly straight away it is the symptoms of the depression and the bipolar and shes a teenager etc. Now i am 18 years old my parents have been trying so hard to sort this out. Four weeks ago i attended a Paediatrician, such a lovely lovely man and with fourty minutes talking to him he said i have ADHD and it is serious. This was two weeks before my end of year exams which decide whether i get accepted into nursing next year. got put on Ritalin first time i took it, increased heart rate, nearly had a heart attack, sweaty hands, felt like i had insects crawling up my legs, felt like i was going to die had a fever too, what could i do, go into the exams and fail or take this medication feel like shit but pass? sorted that out though took the meds but found the right dose so im ok. Abused the prescription medication though.... I knew i shouldnt but i was snorting the drug before i was diagnosed with Ritalin anyway. That is sorted though my mother keeps tabs on them. i just wanted to tell every body my story and my real reason for joining this is to meet people with ADHD because i know noone and im feeling like an outcast if anyone could talk to me and just help me out would be greatly appreciated. What i just cant understand is how unfairly you stil get treated if you have ADHD had an interview the other day and they asked if i have any mental or physical disorders i said yes ADHD and they were beyond shocked and said are you like a naughty boy then. People need more education. and no i didnt get the job screw them. Posted on 12/30/07, 02:12 am |

there are more people out there with ADHD and ADD then most people relize. If not yourself, then a family member. It's very hard walking in the dark, but keep looking for the help that you need, including counseling. Good luck and may God bless you.

Welcome to DS. My advice to you, is not to tell future potenetial employers about your attention disorder, as they will only discriminate as you have experienced.
