How often to see doctor??

My son's psychiatrist has changed her office policy so we now have to go every 30 days and see her for a new script. My son is on Concerta which requires a new script every 30 days. His previous doctor (in another state) only wanted to see him every 6 months and I could pick up the prescription every 30 days withOUT seeing the doctor. So my quesiton is if you or someone you know is on a med that you have to have a new script for every month then how often do you have to see the doctor? I think it is stupid to see a doctor every month and to have to pay a copay plus the script cost but then I don't know for sure which is why I am asking the question.
