The Worst Foods for Heartburn

By Dr. Orrange August 16, 2008 8:54pm

Many of you know the feeling, the burning sensation behind the breastbone, worse after you've eaten. You might even have some regurgitated acidic material in your mouth. You then think: "shoot I shouldn't have eaten that!" There are many foods known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter muscle causing reflux and irritation of the lining of the esophagus. Frequent heartburn is often a sign of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Here are some of the worst foods for GERD:

1)  fatty foods : doughnuts, butter cookies, brownies

2) Spicy Foods: Curry, salsa

3) Carbonated beverages: the pH of coke is 2, with 1 being the most acidic so this is a winner.

4) Alcohol : wine, hard alcohol and beer (the pH of beer is 2.5 so it is a close second to coke)

5) Coffee: This includes decaf too. The pH is 4.0 so it is better than coke or beer but still will make you burn.

6) Peppermint: York peppermint patties ouch!

7) Chocolate: Dark chocolate more of a culprit than milk chocolate.

8) Citrus fruits or juices: orange juice, lemonade, grapefruit juice.

9) Fried foods: French fries, chicken nuggets, chicken wings.

10) Ketchup and mustard

11) Vinegar

12) Tomato Sauce

13) Aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs other than Tylenol (acetaminophen)

What are your personal demon foods?

Very informative Dr. I every so often get gurd, or acid coming up in my mouth. I hate it. Too much vinegar, or using sauerkraut, or even overeating can do it.
    Thanks Carsti

Bacon and eggs; sausage and eggs. Is it the meat or is it the eggs? Acid is extreme and painful. I LOVE BREAKFAST ANY TIME OF THE DAY!

anyone having trouble with throwing up. I am 2 1/2 years out and lately have been having trouble throwing up. It isn't with any kind of junk food but chicken and a lean cuisine did it. Lately only with dinner not lunch or breakfast. Any suggestions on what to eat? Scared to eat dinner because I get sick. Even a protein bar did it.

Thanks for the info. I would say most of the above. I just get a burning once in a while, but I can see there are a lot of things we shouldn't eat. Sharon

You forgot to mention anything with sugar in it.

Anything I'm allergic to -- only about 7,000 foods at last count -- gives me a case of the fiery belches.

You just listed all my favorites. I have gotten into having a Corona each night. Guess I should stop that. Maybe that is why I cough all night. Also drink lemonade and lots of italian stuff. Chocolate yep, one of my favs.

i eat a lot of seriously spicy food... guess in a way it comforts me, i get heartburn from really random things though... like cereal. I usually counter it with some cucumber and yoghurt.
My antacid tablets actually make it worse.

Yes! Up until about 2 years ago I ate pickles and raw onions with total abandon. Interestingly enough NONE of the stuff on the Doctor's list bothers me!

I have the same problem with raw onions, pizza. Oddly enough, (or maybe not so oddly) It's gotten worse in my old age.
Things I could eat without a care when I was younger make me miserable now.
